Preparations for Photo/Film Week are underway

The Zonguldak Exhibition Room has started preparations for a new program to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the great strike of the Zonguldak Coal Basin mine workers.

Entering its 26th year, the Exhibition Room is preparing for the second Photo/Film Week in November and December 2025.

Throughout the week, photography exhibitions and shows will be held, as will an archive exhibition of printed materials such as magazines, newspapers, and posters. Films by director Fatih Akın will be shown in the section on immigration to Germany.

Preparations for the week's program are underway. Fatih Akın's Short and Painless, "In July" with Soul Kitchen , "My Father's Wings," "Building Boats from Watermelon Rinds," and "Press, Print" will be screened. Among the migration films,  " Welcome to Germany " and "Bus" will be screened. Painter Orhan Taylan will be remembered with the documentary "Orhan Taylan in His Workshop," and Nevzat Çakır, who passed away in 2021, will be remembered with the DVD "The Name of the Street is Photography." Alaadin Kara will present his narrative on the Zonguldak Miner's Memorial.

On November 30, 1990, mine workers organized in the General Mining Labor Union (GMİS) went on strike.
This year's program was dedicated to Tankut Öktem, the sculptor of the Zonguldak Miner's Monument, and to the memory of the photographer Sebastião Salgado, who passed away recently  .
The event, which first took place last year, was organized to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the long strike of 1984/85 by coal miners in the British (UK) region and the 34th anniversary of the long strike of 1990/91 by miners in the Zonguldak (Turkey) coal basin. The program was dedicated to the memory of İrfan Yalçın, a writer for the coal miners, and Nedim Günsür, a painter remembered as a kind friend of the miners.
In a call for preparations for the week, photographer İbrahim Akyürek, director of the Exhibition Room  , stated that they want to build a citizen-led, volunteer cultural bridge between the world's coal fields. He explained that they are seeking support for their programs from individuals, communities, and organizations that embrace the challenging labor culture experienced in different basins ( Germany, the Netherlands, Britain, Belgium, Slovakia, Ukraine, etc.)  .
